New Jersey Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov has been suspended three games by the NHL after the 28-year-old hit Carolina Hurricanes forward Zach Boychuk in the head with his elbow.

Volchenkov was given a three-minute minor penalty after the hit, one of three penalties he drew in the game. New Jersey went on to win the Tuesday night game, 3-2 in overtime.

For the season, Volchenkov has no goals and four assists.

Boychuk was uninjured on the play and is expected to skate this week.
