Nets Win Tenth Game, Avoid Infamy

Nets
By Justin Worsley

Finally, the New Jersey Nets have something to celebrate.

After starting the season with 18 consecutive losses, the Nets have been compared to the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers, who holds the NBA record for the worst season in NBA history, going 9-73.

The Nets, however, finally won their tenth game on Monday night, defeating the Spurs 90-84 in New Jersey. The Spurs (44-29) are currently battling to stay in the playoff hunt.

Despite leading in nearly every statistical category, the Spurs couldn't hold down the Nets late 18-7 run, which started with 5:49 left in the game.

Center Brook Lopez had a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds, including 10 points in the fourth quarter, propelling the Nets away from history.

The Nets, who have won three of their last four games, could avoid having the league's worst record as well. Minnesota is currently 14-60, losing 16 straight games.

The Nets play against on Wednesday against Phoenix in New jersey. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. For more information, www.nba.com/nets.

Florida Woman Files Lawsuit Against Steelers' Holmes

Santonio Holmes
By Justin Worsley

Ben Roethlesberger isn't the only Steeler receiving bad publicity.

Anshonoe Mills filed a lawsuit Wednesday, claiming Pittsburgh wide receiver Santonio Holmes grabbed her by the face and threw a glass at the right side of her face, cutting her close to her eye, because she was sitting on a couch at Rain Night Club's VIP section.

Mills also claims that Holmes and a police officer intimidated her into not pressing charges on the Mar. 7 incident. According to the lawsuit, Mills incoherently told the police she was hit in the face and was bleeding but would not press charges. The lawsuit also states that Holmes offered to bribe Mills with money in order to avoid a lawsuit, stating that as a NFL star, he could not afford to get in legal trouble.

Mills is suing the Super Bowl XLIII MVP for $15,000 in damages.

Pittsburgh began their off-field workout today without Roethlesberger. The quarterback is accused of assaulting a 20-year-old female college student from Georgia. No charges have been filed against Roethlesberger.

Kentucky Done As West Virginia Advances To The Final Four

By Matthew Klein

The 1 seeded Kentucky Wildcats who had the most talent out of all the teams in the tournament are going home. West Virginia beat them Saturday night 73-66 to advance to their first final four since 1959. Kentucky, who has four players who will all be going top 15 in the draft this year certainly didn't play like they were. The Wildcats all year have struggled from three, but tonight was really bad they missed their first 20 attempts and finished going only 4-32 which is only 12.5%. "We've had games where we missed free throws and three pointers, but our defense, we gave up a lot of layups and they just outplayed us" Cousins said after the game at the press conference.

West Virginia, on the other hand relied on the three ball all night. In the first half, they scored eight threes and did not get a single two pointer. Joe Mazzula, the injury replacement came up huge scoring 17 points in his first start of the season. Da'Sean Butler, who has been carrying this team all year long led the team with 18 points. West Virginia will face the winner of Duke and Baylor in the Final Four next week. "I talked about it being special, two more and it will be really special" coach Bob Huggins said after the game.

So, as Mountaineer fans celebrate all the way to Indianapolis, Wildcat nation is going to think about what went wrong and just hope that either Wall or Cousins decide to stay but don't count on it.

Yankees Name Hughes Fifth Starting Pitcher

Phil Hughes
By Justin Worsley

The New York Yankees have announced that Phil Hughes will be the final starter in the Yankees five-man pitching rotation. Hughes won the job over Joba Chamberlain, Sergio Mitre, Alfredo Aceves and Chad Gaudin.

Hughes, 23, started seven games last season before the Yankees moved him to the bullpen after Chien-Ming Wang was placed on the disabled list.

Chamberlain was a starting pitcher last season for the Yankees, but was moved to a relief role when the Yankees switched to a three-man rotation in the post-season. Manager Joe Girardi said that Chamberlain will be given the opportunity to work as a reliever again, setting up Mariano Rivera to close the game.

Gaudin was released Thursday following the announcement.

Hughes, a right-handed thrower, had an 8-3 record last season with a 3.03 ERA and a career-high 96 strikeouts.

AL East Preview

By Matthew Klein

The AL East is the most talented and toughest division. You have the two powerhouse team with the Red Sox and Yankees. Along with Tampa Bay who is right behind those two and the Orioles who are a team building for the future and the Jays who have taken a step back. This is how I think the AL East will fare this year.

1. New York Yankees

The defending World Champions are still the team to beat in the division. The lost World Series MVP Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon. But also at the same time picked up Curtis Granderson and Javier Vasquez who I think will be the second best pitcher in the rotation. There front three of CC, AJ Burnett and Andy Pettite are one of the best staff's in Baseball. It looks like Joba will be headed back to the bullpen where he belongs and Hughes will take the fifth spot. Along with Joba they have David Robertson and Alfredo Aceves both who are on the rise, which will give the Yanks one of the best bullpens in Baseball. When it's all said and done I expect them to battle with Sox and will end up taking the division.

2. Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox are another team with great pitching. You could make the case that their front three of Beckett, Lester and Lackey are better than the Yankees front three. The hitting is what might stop the them from being better than the Yankees Ortiz is borderline done same as Lowell. They still have Youkilis and Pedroia and Ellsbury and they can still try to land Adrian Gonzalez from San Diego. They will battle with Yankees all season but, I expect them to finish in second and take the Wild Card.

3. Tampa Bay Rays

Unfortunatly, for the Rays they are in the same division with the Sox and Yanks and it will be very difficult to compete for first. They did not really make any key moves in the offseason and BJ Upton is coming off a miserable year and will need him to win. They still have all the power hitters in Longoria, Crawford and Pena. Pitching will be key for them David Price is going to have to develop and come through for them and Garza and Shield and the other pitchers will have to stay healthy. Unless Upton bounces back and has a great year they will finish in third and come up short because of the division they are in.

4. Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles are an interesting team that are trying to rebuild for the future. Matt Wieters had a solid rookie campaign last year and is already being talked about of being one of the best catchers in the game one day. Adam Jones has showed major potential and Nick Markakis has been their best hitter. They added Miguel Tejada at third base as well as Garret Atkins for first base. They have young pitchers that are on the rise and added Kevin Millwood in the offseason. The Orioles will win in the 70-80 games category but, like the Rays the division that they are in will just make it too tough to compete for a playoff spot and will finish fourth.

5. Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays are a team that has gone downward the past couple of years. AJ Burnett signed with the Yankees and they traded away ace Roy Halladay in the offseason. The fired GM JP Richardi in October. The huge $126 million contract that they gave Vernon Wells in 2007 has not lived up and they lost one of their best hitters from last year Marco Scutaro and replaced him with Alex Gonzalez. The olny good thing is they have a couple of nice players in Aaron Hill, Brandon Morrow and Travis Snyder but at the end of the day they will finish in last place and only win about 50-60 games.

Rams Offer Trade Proposal For McNabb

Donovan McNabb
By Justin Worsley

Only one day after head coach Andy Reid announced that the team was seeking to trade one of their three quarterbacks, the Rams have taken charge. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Rams offered the Eagles their second-round draft choice (33rd overall) and free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe.

McNabb, 33, earned a trip to his sixth Pro Bowl last season after throwing for 3,553 yards and 22 touchdowns, but the team is loaded at quarterback. The Eagles drafted Kevin Kolb in the second-round of the 2007 NFL draft and view him as the quarterback of the future. Last season, the Eagles also signed former first-overall draft pick Michael Vick. Vick missed the last two seasons while serving a 21-month prison term for running an illegal dog fighting ring.

The Rams are in dire need for a franchise quarterback. The team as been inconsistent at the position and have only won six games in the last three seasons. Many analysts have predicted that the Rams will select Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford with the first overall pick. If the Rams are able to trade for a quarterback instead, it opens up the Rams draft possibilities, including looking at heavily-touted defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska.

"My position hasn't changed. I've said all along that I would like to win a Super Bowl and finish my career in Philadelphia...I understand the situation well and just hope whichever direction the Eagles decide to go in, they do it quickly," McNabb said on is online blog, yardbarker.blog.

McNabb was the fifth overall draft pick in the 1999. He has played his entire career in Philadelphia.

Pacman May Return To NFL

Pacman
By Justin Worsley

After spending a year out of the league, it seems that troubled cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones has found a new team, the Detroit Lions.

Head coach Jim Schwartz told the Associated Press that the team is "definitely interested" but "nothing is imminent."

Jones was a first-round draft choice by the Tennessee Titans in 2005. After multiple off-field incidents, Jones was suspended the entire 2007 season as well as part of the 2008 season. Tennessee traded Jones to Dallas during the 2007 off-season.

Schwartz, who coached Jones in Tennessee as a defensive coordinator, has also signed former Titan defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch this off-season. The Lions finished in last place of nearly every defensive category last season.

Health Care Package Already Faces Speed-Bump

By Justin Worsley

The Health Care Reform Bill, which was passed last Sunday, has now approached it's first major obstacle, coverage for children.

The new law would give insurance companies the ability to deny coverage to children who have a pre-existing medical problem. The situation is a double-edged sword, however, because if a child is accepted for coverage or is already covered, an insurance company can not fix their policies to prevent coverage. This protection policy will come into effect later this year.

On Tuesday, it was announced by President Barrack Obama's administration that Health and Human Services Secretary Katleen Sebilus will issue new regulations in order to prevent any loopholes for coverage for children. The Obama administration has continuously claimed the law is interpreted that children can not be denied coverage.

"Parents who are worried about getting coverage for their children with pre-existing conditions now are assured that insurance companies have to give them coverage-this year," Obama said last Saturday to the House of Democrats.

The problem lies in insurance policies purchased for families, which is commonly purchased by the self-employed.

Under law, parent of children who are turned down by an insurer have a fallback plan, giving parents the ability to seek insurance through high-risk insurance pools.

The Health Care Reform Bill will fully kick in in 2014, where insurers will no longer be able to deny insurance coverage for the ill and the government will begin to give tax credits to new insurance markets.

Reyes Cleared To Return To Mets

Jose Reyes
By Justin Worsley

It looks like the Mets have a little luck on their side.

After a miserable 2009 season where nearly every starter on the team spent time on the disabled list, the Mets started their Spring Training session exactly where they left off last season, losing shortstop Jose Reyes indefinitely to an hyperactive thyroid.

Reyes, however, has been cleared to return to the Mets on Wednesday from his doctors. The 26-year-old was given a new diet by his doctors and was told to refrain from physical activity while they performed weekly tests on him.

Prior to his injury, Mets manager Jerry Manuel stated that Reyes needed to play in at least 10 Spring Training games in order to be prepared for the season. When asked whether Reyes would be on the field when the Mets open their season on Apr. 5 against the Marlins, general manager Omar Minaya was not clear in his response.

"I don't want to say no, we'll see when he gets here...Let's see how things go. We're not going to say that he's not going to be ready," said Minaya.

Reyes, a two-time All Star selection, is the Mets all-time leader in triples and stolen bases. He was limited to 36 games last season due to nagging hamstring injuries.

90's Thriller Officially Revived

Scream
By Justin Worsley

After almost a two years of speculation, it is official, "Scream 4" will become a movie.

The 90's horror franchise will be directed by Wes Craven, who also directed all three previous installments. Also returning will be Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette, who were all main characters in the original trilogy. Kevin Williamson will also be returning to write the screenplay.

"Working with Courtney, David and Neve was a blast ten years ago and I'm sure it will be again," said Craven in a press release.

"Scream 4" will be the first of a new trilogy, according to Williamson. Along with the original cast members, a new, young cast will also star, though no other actors or actresses have been announced.

The Weinstein Group announced in 2008 that a fourth film was in development and since then thew company has been working to piece together the original cast members for a reunion.

The film begins production this Spring and will be released in theaters on Apr. 15, 2011.

NFL Owners Approve New Overtime Format For Playoffs

Photobucket
By Justin Worsley

The NFL owners have officially voted to change the overtime rule, but only for the playoffs.

The vote, which was voted 28-4 to change, will change how teams work their offense in overtime games.

The current format is a "sudden-death" overtime where, simply put, the first team to score wins. A common complaint about this current format is that the team who wins the coin flip basically wins the game. Since 1994, 59.8-percent of teams who win the coin toss score on the opening possession.

In the new format, the team who receives the ball first can still win off of the opening possession, but they have to score a touchdown in order to do so. If they are only able to score a field goal, the opposing team has a chance to score a touchdown and win the game. If neither team scores a field goal, or both do, the game reverts to normal sudden-death rules.

Minnesota, who lost to New Orleans in the NFC Title game off of a field goal on the first possession of overtime, was one of four teams who opposed the overtime change, along with Buffalo, Baltimore and Cincinnati.

"We've had this discussion for a number of years. We felt like this year's proposal, which we call 'modified sudden-death,' was really an opportunity for us to make what we think is a pretty good rule, sudden-death, even better," said Rich McKay, the NFL's co-chair on the Competition Committee.

The NFL, however, did not modify the overtime rules for the regular season, which will follow typical sudden-death rules, upsetting several coaches.

"If it's good for the postseason, why not have it the same in the regular season?" asked Lions head coach Jim Schwartz in an interview with Sports Illustrated.

Some teams are also in the playoffs before the regular season is even over. In Week 11 during the 2008 NFL season, New England lost an overtime game to the Jets after New York won the coin toss. New England finished the season 11-5 and out of the playoffs.

The NFL owner's meet annually in Orlando.

Houston Men's Basketball Coach Resigns After Six Seasons

Tom Penders
By Justin Worsley

After a memorable season for the Cougars, which included earning a bid to their first NCAA tournament in 18 seasons, head coach Tom Penders announced his resignation today, stating that it was time for another challenge.

Penders took over the program in 2004 and has posted a 121-77 record. The Cougars are the fourth team Penders has taken to the national tournament, only seven other coaches have accomplished this feat.

"I came to the University of Houston in 2004 with the goal of getting UH back in the NCAA tournament," Penders told the Associated Press. "We achieved this goal and now it's time to move on."

Penders, 64, has developed a habit of taking struggling programs and building them into prominent contenders. Texas, George Washington University, Tufts, Columbia, Fordham and Rhode Island have all been a part of Penders 648 career wins.

Several programs could be calling Penders, who left Houston with two years remaining on his contract, including Fordham, who fired Dereck Whittenberg in Dec. due to numerous losses and an unusually large amount of transfers. Oregon could be another possiblity after firing head coach Ernie Kent last week.

Houston lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Maryland 89-77.

Former Cy Young Winner Gagne Released By Dodgers

Eric Gagne
By Justin Worsley

Reliever Eric Gagne signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers last February, hoping to jump-start a career that has gone downhill ever since he left the Dodgers in 2006. The 2003 Cy Young winner, however, requested and was granted a release last Sunday after being informed he would be sent back to the Minor Leagues.

Gagne accepted a Minor League contract, hoping to improve his throwing following multiple shoulder injuries, which derailed his career and even sent him to play in an independent league last fall. The right-handed thrower was invited to Spring Training where he was far from impressive, allowing six runs off of eight hits and posting an astronomical 20.25 ERA in three games.

Gagne set a MLB record by converting 84 consecutive saves between 2003-2004 including 55 in 2003. In 2005, however, he underwent Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career and never returned to his All-Star form. The following season, Gagne suffered from herniated discs in his back, resulting in Los Angeles to decline extending his contract.

In Dec. 2007, only three days after signing a deal with Milwaukee, he showed up in the Mitchell Report, linking him to using HGH during his professional career.

Gagne, 34, was moved in the Dodgers bullpen in 2002 after the retirement of Jeff Shaw.

#1 Virginia Drops Towson

By Justin Worsley

The Cavaliers were slowed down, but surely they couldn't be stopped.

Towson looked impressive early, taking a 4-2 lead over Virginia after the first period, but then Virginia took charge, scoring five goals in less than nine minutes, putting themselves in a permanent lead, defeating the un-ranked Tigers 15-10.

Virginia attacker Chris Bocklet led the game with four goals, and Virginia dominated Towson in face-offs, winning the first seven. Towson, however, committed less penalties, only serving two penalty minutes while Virginia played with one less man for five minutes.

Virginia is arguably the most dominant team in the nation once the second period starts, outscoring opponents this season 36-10, including a 6-2 period against Towson, including a goal by attacker Steele Stanwyck with 15 seconds left before halftime which gave them an 8-6 edge at halftime.

Towson, who has now dropped ten straight games against the Cavaliers, did see one bright spot on the team. Goalkeeper Travis Love had a career-high 16 saves, but was stuck in a flurry of shots by Virginia at times. Virginia out-shot the Tigers 37-34.

Though outmatched, Towson never gave up, consistently trying to tie the game and avoiding a blowout loss. Virginia was unable to put the team away, but was simply more seasoned and more athletic.

The top-ranked Cavaliers face-off against #7 Johns Hopkins this Saturday, Mar. 27 at noon. For more information, including broadcast information, visit ncaa.com.

Mauer Signs Extention

By Matthew Klein
Joe Mauer has just signed a 8 year $180 million deal to stay in Minnesota until 2018. Not only is this good for the Twins but it is also good for Baseball. Mauer could have easily, waited till the end of the season to test free agency and go to either the Yankees, Red Sox or the Mets. But with their new stadium opening the Twins were not going to let that happen. He is the franchise player and without him people would probablly not even come to watch the games.

Mauer, who was drafted by the Twins as the No. 1 overall pick in 2001 has a career batting average of .327. He was almost unanamiously named the 2009 MVP batting .365 with 28 home runs and 96 RBIs. He is a three time all star and two time gold glove award winner and also is only one of ten players in history to have three or more batting titles. A press conference will be held Monday night at 6 pm when both Mauer and the Twins will speak.

Twins Closer To Undergo Season Enging Surgery

Joe Nathan
By Justin Worsley

Twins closer Joe Nathan has announced this morning that he will undergo Tommy John Surgery to replace a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow. The right-handed pitcher damaged his elbow earlier in the month during an exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox.

Nathan was holding on the the slim hope that he would be able to prevent surgery this season, despite the Twins diagnosing his elbow as a "significant" UCL tear in his elbow. Recovery from the surgery will take 12 months. Nathan hopes to return for opening day next season.

The decision came by Nathan after a throwing session with pitching coach Rick Anderson. Nathan said his elbow felt fine until the two separated to about 60-70 feet apart, where Nathan felt the same stiffness he felt when he first injured his elbow.

"It didn't go like we hoped," Nathan said. "We knew this was a long shot but what this did do was clear my head."

Nathan, 35, is a significant part of the Twins pitching staff, saving 47 games last year in 52 attempts, along with a 2.10 ERA.

Nationals Send Strasburg Back To Minors

Steven Strasburg
By Justin Worsley

Despite a stellar performance at Spring Training, the Washington Nationals have decided not to rush Steven Strasburg's development, sending both him and Drew Storen to Double-A Harrisburg until further notice.

Strasburg, the first overall pick in the MLB Draft last year, is seen by many as the savior of a downtrodden Nationals' organization. The San Diego State alum was Washingtons most dominant pitcher during Spring Training, going 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA, allowing eight hits while striking 12 batters out in nine innings of action.

Though Strasburg did have a great showing, the team feels he needs to slow his delivery in order to be a more successful pitcher. Strasburg possesses a 98 m.p.h. fastball as well as a slider-curve ball which batters have struggled to hit.

In his last Spring Training game against St. Louis, Strasburg allowed two home runs early, but then took control, striking out eight batters in four innings.

"I'm not a believer that a player can come from amateur baseball and step right into the Major Leagues," said Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo. "I've seen terrific prospects attempt it, and the failure rate is too great. This is a prized asset. We have to do what's best for the player and the organization long-term, and I the best way to do it is to get some seasoning in the Minor Leagues."

The Nationals lost a league-high 103 games last season.

Metcalf Avenges Loss, Wins Second National Title

By Justin Worsley

Iowa's Brent Metcalf has once again shown he the the nation's best wrestler.

Metcalf, the 2008 national champion at the 149 pound weight class finally returned to the top of the podium this season after a hiccup last year against North Carolina State's Darrion Caldwell, defeating Ohio State's Lance Palmer 3-2.

In the match nicknamed "The Perfect Storm" by spectators, Metcalf used an early takedown to set the tone for the match. Metcalf was awarded the winning bonus point after racking up 1:29 of riding time.

For Metcalf, a redshirt senior, his final collegiate match was one to remember. Despite five career wins over Palmer, a junior, Metcalf was seeded second after losing to Palmer two weeks ago in the Big Ten tournament finals. Palmer's victory is the only setback for Metcalf, who finished the season with a 35-1 record.

"It feels good, feels like I'm redeeming myself from last year a little bit, just because this is the national tournament. You can't get last year back, but you can feel better about it because you finished it off the way you did," said Metcalf.

Prior to the finals, Iowa clinched the team's third straight tournament title, and walked away with three national champions. Along with Metcalf, freshman Matt McDonough won the 125 pound weight class and redshirt junior Jay Borschel capped off an undefeated season by defeating top-seeded Mack Lewnes of Cornell 6-2 to win the 174 pound weight class. Iowa sent five wrestlers in the finals.

Only one wrestler who won a national title last season repeated as a champion, Iowa State's 197 pound wrestler Jake Varner, who finished an undefeated season by defeating Nebraska's Craig Brester 5-2.

Minnesota senior Jayson Ness won the Bill Koll Outstanding Wrestler Award after winning the 133 pound weight class by posting a 6-4 decision over Iowa's Daniel Dennis.

Wisconsin head coach Barry Davis was given the Coach of the Year award.

Crumpler Agrees To Deal With Patriots

alge crumpler
By Justin Worsley

The New England Patriots have agreed to terms with veteran tight end Algre Crumpler. Crumpler will enter 2010 playing for a third different team in the last four seasons. Financial terms were not immediately disclosed.

Crumpler, who went to four Pro Bowls as an Atlanta Falcon (2003-2006) before signing with Tennessee in 2008, will upgrade a Patriots rushing offense which was ranked 12th in the league last season. Crumpler, who started 19 games in two seasons in Tennessee, helped lead the way for running back Chris Johnson as he ran for 2,006 yards last season.

New England lost starting tight end Ben Watson to Cleveland in free agency last week. Crumpler was drafted in the second round of the 2001 NFL draft and has caught 36 touchdowns in 340 receptions.

Tim Burton Plans Remake Of 'The Addams Family'

Addams Family
By Justin Worsley

Cult favorite director Tim Burton has made a name for himself in Hollywood as both a brilliant director and artist. It is now safe to say that Burton is brilliant at reviving television and film series as well.

Burton first revived the Batman franchise, directing the 1987 blockbuster film "Batman" as well as it's 1991 sequel, "Batman Returns." "Sleepy Hollow," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,"Sweeney Todd," and most recently "Alice in Wonderland" have all undergone a makeover with Burton behind the camera. Burton is now looking at recreating "The Addams Family" according to hitflix.com.

"The Addams Family" was created in 1938 as a single-panel cartoon for the New Yorker by Charles Addams. In 1964, a television show was created, focusing on the extended family's macabre interests, while at the same time spoofing contemporary cultural issues. In 1991, Barry Sonnefield directed a film adaptation of the television series.

Burton, however, plans to return to the roots, claiming the upcoming film will be based solely on the Addams' comics and not the television show or film.

Along with talks of Burton's adaptation, "The Addams Family" will also hit Broadway this spring, starring Nathan Lane and BeBe Neuwirth.

Seattle Trades For QB Whitehurst

Charlie Whitehurst
By Justin Worsley

In an off-season evolved around the revolving door of the quarterback position, it looks like Seattle has found a potential successor for incumbent Matt Hasselbeck.

The Seahawks have completed a trade with San Diego to acquire Charlie Whitehurst, a 2006 third-round draft pick from Clemson. San Diego will switch spots with the Seahawks in the second round of the upcoming draft, now posessing the 40th overall pick instead of the 60th, and also receive Seattle's third-round draft pick, giving the Chargers three picks in the third round after trading troubled cornerback Antonio Cromartie to the Jets earlier this month.

Whitehurst, 27, has only taken four snaps in his NFL career, playing behind franchise quarterback Phillip Rivers. Whitehurst is yet to throw his first NFL pass, however that could happen very soon. Hasselbeck, 34, has suffered multiple injuries in the last two seasons and is not expected to remain as the team's starting quarterback as they enter the Pete Carroll era.

Whitehurst has one career touchdown, a 14-yard dash in 2006 against the Tennessee Titans.

Mariners Ace Lee Suspended Five Games

Cliff Lee
By Justin Worsley

Major League Baseball's vice president of discipline Bob Watson has delayed the much anticipated debut of pitcher Cliff Lee for the Mariners.

Lee, who was acquired in the off-season from Philadelphia in a four team, nine player trade, was suspended five games and fined an undisclosed amount for intentionally throwing two pitches at Diamonbacks catcher Chris Snyder. The first pitch was inside, the second aimed just above Snyder's helmet.

Lee is expected to appeal, if he does not he will miss the Mariners first game of the season on Apr. 5 against Oakland.

Bad blood developed between Lee and Snyder in the first inning, where the two players collided during a play at home plate. Lee immediately received an ejection following his second pitch at Snyder in the third inning, sparking both bleachers to clear out as Snyder charged towards the pitcher's mound. A fight did not occur.

"I was trying to go inside and a couple got away from me and the guy hitting got mad and came close to the mound and I got thrown out in the process," Lee told the Associated Press.

Lee won the AL Cy Young award in 2008 while he was with the Cleveland Indians. The left-handed thrower has a career record of 90-52 in eight seasons as well as a 3.97 ERA.

O'Neal Returns To Cleveland

Shaq
By Justin Worsley

Cleveland Cavaliers center Shaquielle O'Neal has returned to the team after recovering from a torn ligament in his thumb on Feb. 25 while blocking a shot during a game against the Celtics, according to the Associated Press.

O'Neal, who underwent surgery on the torn ligament, has not traveled with the team, instead resting in his Florida home. On Monday, O'Neal returned to Cleveland to speak with team doctors and general manager Danny Ferry. O'Neal will not travel with the team today to Detroit as they face the Pistons. O'Neal will face a brief rehabilitation period before returning to the team.

The Cavaliers traded for O'Neal during the summer, hoping to finally piece together a championship-winning team in the final year of Lebron James' contract. O'Neal has started all 53 games he has played in Cleveland, averaging 12 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game.

QB Shaun Hill Traded To Detroit

Shaun Hill
By Justin Worsley

After the resurrection of Alex Smith, Shaun Hill saw his role diminishing as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.

Hill started the first six games last season in San Francisco and threw for 943 yards and 5 touchdowns before losing his job to Smith, the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Head Coach Mike Singletary announced last month that he would stick with Smith as the starting quarterback and the team signed David Carr on Monday, making it all but official that Hill's days as a 49er were numbered.

Detroit used the first overall pick in last years' draft to select Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford, however, Stafford ended last season on injured-reserve and the team is looking for an ideal backup after neglecting to resign Daunte Culpepper.

The 49ers will receive a seventh-round draft pick, according to The Sacramento Bee, a local newspaper for the 49ers.

Trezza Field Rezoning Causes Controversy At Middletown Town Council Meeting

By Justin Worsley

Monday's Town Council Meeting in Middletown started off as any meeting normally does, but suddenly got ugly within an hour.

Many of the town residents present were donning clothing branding the town's local Pop Warner football team, the River Plaza-Lincroft Chargers. One of the topic of discussion at the Town Council Meeting was to potentially relocate the team's playing field from it's current location near Nut Swamp Road to a new location in West Front Street.

One of the problems with the current location is parking, which currently holds 100 spots. According to Rob Fischer, the Football Commissioner of the Chargers, there are 15 teams and around 380 players. When Fischer took the reigns as commissioner, there were only 160 players in the program.

The Chargers' home field, Nick Trezza Field, also features four baseball diamonds for a spring baseball league and basketball court. The field is used year-round for all activities.

Middletown Township's goal for relocation is to remove the field from the wetland area it currently plays on and increase parking spots. Parent's however, are unhappy with the location of the new field, which will feature no spotlights, concession stands or public announcement system. The Chargers currently practice in the evening, giving the players time to do their homework and allow them to practice in the cooler night temperatures. Concession stands are also a necessary asset to the program, which sells snacks and beverages during practices as well as games as a mean to increase profits in the organization.

The wetlands situation, however, has a solution that has already been implemented at Middletown High School South, a synthetic turf field. Middletown South, which is also located on wetlands, was approved for a turf field in 2004 after the program had to delay their high school state championship game in 2003 twice due to unplayable conditions of the field after a snowfall caused the field to become muddy and wet.

After Middletown South was given a turf field, Middletown North was then approved for one. The Township plans to give turf fields to both the Chargers and the Middletown Eagles, another Pop Warner football program in town.

These fields, however, are not solely for football. Other sports programs, such as field hockey, soccer and lacrosse will also be involved with using the turf fields.

During the meeting, Mayor Gerald Scharfenberger attempted to remove the discussion about the field to a different date, citing an engineering error as the meaning. The townships engineering firm, TNM, had no representatives present for the meeting.

"If we can do turf at Trezza Field that would be great, but we have some issues, including the space and parking situatiion," said Councilman Sean Byrnes.

During the public speaking portion of the meeting, Allen Vrabel of University Drive, unveiled a new design at Trezza field, displaying additional parking spaces ad well as two baseball diamonds and the turf field. The layout, which was given by an engineering firm who's name was not disclosed, features 220 parking spaces and would only cost an estimated $194,000, a far inferior amount to the Township's estimate, which was anywhere between $800,000 to $1 million, according to township resident Jeff Bloomberg of Lehigh Drive.

"During a man to man talk you had with me, you told me you had to follow the advice of your professionals," said Vrabel to Scharfenberger. "Here are set plans from a professional, you don't know what you're relying on."

"The plans are here, the field fits, you were caught," said Bill Heaney, a volunteer coach for the Chargers. "Let's do what's right for the community. Croydon Hall [the location of the Middletown Eagles playing field] wants their field, Trezza wants their field."

The original bond ordinance for Nick Trezza field and Croydon Hall was written in 2006.

Other members have began writing petitions against the relocation of the Chargers. Mary Mahoney of the Lincroft section of Middletown has submitted 410 signatures and Robert Mosquera has created a web-site, which he hopes to be launched this week. The web-site is an acronym for "The River-Plaza Chargers Need A Field."

"We are going to look at this and determine if this is feasible. In order to plan this, however, we need to speak with the engineer and have him speak to our engineer in order to see if this is viable," said Scharfenberger.

2010 NCAA March Madness Picks

By Brian Harris

It’s March, so that means rainstorms, St. Patty’s Day and March Madness. Thousands of people all over the country fill out a bracket (or brackets) in order to win whatever pool they are in. The tournament has truly turned into a national pastime that during the latter part of March into the beginning of April, gives the majority of the country whiplash from constantly looking back & forth from their TV to their scribble-covered brackets.

So as you are sitting at work or wherever you probably shouldn’t be doing your bracket, here are my region-by-region picks and other random bit of info you should know.

Midwest

Regional Final-Kansas over Georgetown

Team That Will Make Some Noise-Georgia Tech

The overall number one seed, Kansas, has an easy road, I feel. The rest of the bracket has underwhelming teams like Maryland, Oklahoma State and Tennessee. The Georgetown Hoyas, the three seed, have a very solid team and I see them tearing through the bottom half of the bracket but in the end, the Jayhawks have a rock-chalk solid base that is simply too good for G-Town to overtake.

West

Regional Final-Syracuse over Pittsburgh

Team That Will Make Some Noise-UTEP

This bracket is very underwhelming, to say the very least. There’s really only three teams in this bracket that are real, honest-to-goodness, threats to make a run for the championship; The ‘Cuse, Pitt and Kansas State. I see the 12th –seeded Conference USA regular season champs UTEP taking advantage of Butler and Vanderbilt and making it to the Sweet 16. In the end, Syracuse, who unfairly had to go out West due to Duke getting a higher one seed, even though they’ve been quite underwhelming this year (and I’m a Duke fan), will beat Pitt in a really good game to head to Indianapolis.

East

Regional Final-West Virginia over Kentucky

Team That Will Make Some Noise-Temple

Kentucky got the hardest draw, in my opinion, bracket-wise in this year’s tournament. With teams like Temple, Missouri, Texas, Marquette and New Mexico, Kentucky drew the proverbial “Group of Death”, to borrow a phrase from the World Cup. I feel that Kentucky’s raw talent, led by wunderkind John Wall, will get through the minefield but will meet their demise by the tank known as the Mountaineers of West Virginia, winners of the Big East, which is the premier conference in college basketball.

South

Regional Final-Duke over Villanova

Team That Will Make Some Noise-Texas A&M

As a Duke fan, it’s really hard for me to justify their bracket. Honestly, this bracket comes across as Coach K picked it himself. Not only do they get the winner of the play-in game, the only other true challenge in this bracket is Villanova. Norte Dame and Purdue lost their top players, Luke Harangody and Robbie Hummel respectively, so they pose no real threat in the tournament. Baylor and Texas A&M are solid Big 12 teams but in the end Duke will use their late-season momentum to take down the Wildcats and go on to Indy.

Final Four

National Semifinals-Kansas over Syracuse, Duke over West Virginia

National Championship-Kansas over Duke

Duke, who started off the season in a very unassuming fashion but slowly built up momentum thanks to Jon Scheyer and Kyle Singler stepping up huge for the Blue Devils, will eek out a win over the Bob Huggins-led Mountaineers while the Orange of Syracuse will put up a valiant effort against the Jayhawks but Kansas is simply too good and will win. As for the championship, the huge pot of luck that Duke fed off of for the entire tournament, draw-wise< will run out and Kansas will make an example out of them on their way to winning their second national championship in three years.

The tournament, as a whole, doesn’t really show any Cinderellas at first glance. At lot of experts think that Siena will use a weakened Purdue as a springboard to a George Mason-like run but that was an exception unlike any other. However, you never know what can happen and that’s why March Madness is called March Madness.

Butler Saves West Virginia As Mountaineers Claim First Big East Title

By Justin Worsley

Two nights ago, Da'Sean Butler shot a game-winning field goal to lift #6 West Virginia over Cincinnati.

In an encore performance, Butler sank in a basket with 4.1 seconds left, breaking a 56-56 tie with #22 Georgetown to help the Mountaineers win their first Big East title.

West Virginia started off slow, unable to record a field goal until six minutes after the game began, however, they quickly recovered and led at halftime, 32-28. During the second half, West Virginia led by as many as nine points until Georgetown came back with a three-point field goal from junior guard Austin Freeman with 51.3 seconds left in the game. Freeman ended the game with 14 points.

Georgetown nearly handed the game to West Virginia. With 27.6 seconds left, guard Chris Wright gave up a costly foul on Joe Mazzula. After Mazzula sank both free throws, however, Wright atoned for his mistake, driving to the basket and forcing another tie. Wright led the Hoyas with 20 points.

West Virginia, which now has an outside shot of being one of the four top-seeded teams in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, dominated Georgetown by winning the rebound battle. The Mountaineers ended the game with more than twice as many rebounds as Georgetown, 51-25.

Another key to success for West Virginia was containing Georgetown center Greg Monroe. The sophomore was defended by Wellington Smith and was only able to muster 11 points, five less than his season average. Smith, who fouled out with 1:37 left in the game, finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

While the Mountaineers can celebrate, there is plenty to work on prior to the NCAA Tournament. West Virginia won three close games, all of them involving games where West Virginia had a large lead and allowed their opponent to come back and nearly steal the game away.

For Butler, a Newark, NJ native, winning the Big East championship in the same stadium his beloved Knicks call home in front of his family was monumental. "it means so much to me," Butler said immediately after the game in an interview with ESPN. "I told my coach I was going to make another big shot." Butler lead West Virginia with 20 points.

The NCAA will officially release the NCAA Tournament brackets tomorrow at 6 p.m. For more information, visit NCAA.com.

Veteran QB Delhomme Signs With Cleveland

Jake Delhomme
By Justin Worsley

Jake Delhomme, the all-time leader in passing yards for the Carolina Panthers, has signed a two year deal with the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns, who are coming off a miserable 5-11 campaign, which ended on a high note when the team won their last four games, are cleaning house under new General Manager Mike Holmgrem. After releasing quarterback Derek Anderson last week, Cleveland immediately looked at Delhomme, who is a proven veteran and team leader. In 2003, Delhomme brought the Panthers to the franchise's first Super Bowl.

Delhomme, who will compete for the starting job as the Browns signal caller, will also be a mentor to Brady Quinn, the Browns first-round draft pick in 2007, has yet to live up to his expectations, posting a 3-9 career record in 12 starts.

Delhomme is coming off the worst season of his career. After throwing 18 interceptions, Delhomme broke a finger in his throwing hand and did not return to action for the rest of the season. The Panthers, who were 4-7 with Delhomme as the starter, released him in favor of Matt Moore, who went 4-1 in Delhomme's place. Moore is expected to start next season for Carolina.

The Browns, who also traded for career backup Seneca Wallace last week, are not looking for an immediate fix with Delhomme, who turned 35 last January, but rather a veteran who can help improve the Brown's young quarterbacks, a position the franchise has struggled with since returning to the leagued in 1999.

Delhomme, a Louisiana native who played for University of Louisiana-Lafayette, was also considering returning to the New Orleans Saints, whom Delhomme began his career with. New Orleans, however, have a franchise quarterback in incumbent Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees, meaning Delhomme would only serve as a backup.

Delhomme has passed for 19,892 yards and 123 touchdowns.

Obama To Donate Nobel Prize Winnings

Barrack Obama
By Justin Worsley

President Barack Obama has decided to donate the $1.4 million awarded to him in November when he won the Nobel Peace Prize to aid, among others, students, veterans' families and survivors of the earthquake in Haiti. The donation, he hopes, will draw attention to other organizations and contribute as well.

While complete terms of financial distribution were not disclosed, it has been reported that $750,000 will be donated to six different organizations who help under-privileged students go to college, and Fisher's House, an organization that provides housing for families with members in Veteran Administration hospitals, will receive $250,000. The rest of the $400,000 will be contributed to a variety of other groups.

Obama, who was surprised to discover he won the Nobel Peace, had planned to donate the money from the beginning.

"These organizations do extraordinary work in the United States and abroad helping students, veterans and countless others in need. I'm proud to support their work," Obama said in a statement.

'Under God' To Remain In Pledge Of Allegiance

By Justin Worsley

After eight years of deliberating, San Francisco-based 9th circuit court ruled that the use of the phrases "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance and "In God We Trust" on United States currency do not violate the First Amendment, which includes the separation of church and state.

The case was first brought forward by atheist Michael Newdow of Sacramento, who stated that the usage of God violates his religious beliefs and is unconstitutional. Newdow constructed a lawsuit after discovering his daughter's school recited the Pledge of Allegiance every morning.

In 2002, the 9th circuit court ruled in favor of Newdow. Former President George W. Bush called the ruling "ridiculous," as the lawsuit went to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2004, where Newdow was shot down due to him not having custody of his daughter.

Newdow returned in 2005, however, after creating another lawsuit under the names of several parents who share his views.

In 1954, the words "under God" were added to the Pledge of Allegiance by federal law, a law augmented during a paranoid McCarthy-era America. The usage of "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance was an attempt to separate the United States from "godless communists."

Newdow told the Associated Press after the hearing that he will appeal the ruling, going as far as the Supreme Court if necessary.

"The whole argument is that 'under God' wasn't placed in the pledge for religious purposes is bogus," Newdow said. "I hope people recognize this is not against God or people who believe in God. It is about the government treating people equally on the basis of their lawful religious views."

The ruling was one of the most controversial of last decade, and could very well spill into this season, however it is very unlikely after yesterday's ruling.

#6 West Virginia Survives Scare, Advances To Semifinals

Syracuse
By Justin Worsley

Marquette, Notre Dame and Georgetown stepped up when it mattered most this season, in the Big East conference tournament.

Each team won as underdogs as #22 Georgetown got the ball rolling today when they shocked #3 Syracuse, 91-84 in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

For an encore performance, Marquette had what was probably their biggest victories of the season when they upened #10 Villanova 80-76.

After two upsets, fans everywhere expected the tournament to return to normalcy after Notre Dame stepped onto the court against #16 Pittsburgh. Instead, Notre Dame walked off with a 50-45 victory.

In the final Big East game of the night, #6 West Virginia needed a buzzer-beater shot by Da'Sean Butler to avoid being upset as well. The Mountaineers won by a score of 54-51.

Despite losing in the opening round, Syracuse could still take a top seed in the upcoming NCAA National Basketall Tournament, and have lost something more than the game, senior forward Arinze Onuaku fell awkwardly on his knee as he was trying to defend a shot. Onuaku, who has had knee problems throughout his entire career, including a knee surgery last spring, will undergo a MRI on Monday.

The potential loss of Onuaku could cripple Syracuse, who normally rotates seven players on the court.

"He's a key part of our team," said Syracuse Head Coach Jim Boeheim. ""He's had a great year and is a tremendous player. We all hope he will be fine."

The Hoyas, who relied on 27 points by junior forward Chris Wright, will face Marquette in the tournament semifinals tomorrow at 7 p.m. on ESPN.

West Virginia went to the wire with Cincinnati. With the score tied 51-51 with less than a minuted to go, Cincinnati had a costly turnover late, which opened the court for West Virginia and they didn't look back.
"We practice to get into intense and tough situations every day," said Butler after the win.

West Virginia will play Notre Dame tomorrow at 9 p.m. on ESPN. For more information, visit espn.com

Clark Found Guilty In Slaying Of Former Broncos CB Williams

Darrent Williams
By Justin Worsley

Rosalind Williams can now breathe easy. Three years after losing her son, former Denver Broncos Cornerback Darrent Williams, his murderer will now be put to jail.

Suspected gang member, Willie Clark, shot Williams to death in a drive-by shooting around 2 a.m. on New Year's Day in 2007. Clark showed no remorse while the verdict was read. Clark, 26, faced 21 charges, including murder in the first degree, and was found guilty of all of them. On April 30, Clark will begin serving a life sentence.

The court case took two years to develop, mostly due to the fact that a majority of the eye-witnesses were involved in a gang drug ring which was under federal investigation and kept a code of silence about the Williams shooting.

An altercation occurred between Williams as well as several other Broncos members at the Denver night club Safari with members of the Tre-Tre Crips, which Clark is allegedly involved with. The sides had a brief confrontation as the members of the Broncos entered the club and continued in the club itself. According to prosecutors, Williams was acting as a peacemaker between the two warring sides.

At 2 a.m. the Broncos limousine was shot by Clark, using a .40-caliber handgun from an SUV. Williams died in teammate Javon Walkers arms.

In exchange for lighter sentences, several members of the Tre-Tre Crips also testified against Clark, though two declined, fearing for the lives of their families if they decided to testify. Clark refused to testify as well. Defense attorney Darren Cantor claimed Clark was receiving death threats toward him and his family if he had spoken in court.

"This is what this is about," said fellow defense attorney Abraham Hutt. "Willie Clark is a scapegoat."

"Darrent's legacy will live on for all of us in the Broncos organization, and the outstanding work done each day at the Darrent Williams Memorial Teen Center is a tribute to his impact on his community. Out hearts continue to go out to the Williams' family," said Broncos owner Pat Bowlen.

The Darrent Williams Memorial Teen Center was opened in March 2008 but former teammate Dominique Foxworth. Many Broncos volunteer time at the center, including running back Knowshon Moreno, who currently wears Williams jersey number, 27, in honor of him.

The Madness is Upon Us

By Matthew Klein
The greatest couple of weeks in sports is coming up. Yes, that's right March Madness is back. This year it could easily be the year of upsets. There is not one team in College where you look at them and say to yourself this team is going to cruise to the Final Four. That includes Kentucky, Syracuse, Kansas and the other big programs. Yes, Kentucky has had a really good year and when you talk about talent they have the best by far with Wall, Patterson and Cousins. There has never been a year when two players from the same team will go one and two in the draft which will happen this year with Wall and Cousins unless there is a change.

When you look at Kentucky they have played in way too many close games this year. Not to mention they are awful from three point range. So, would you pick them over some of the other teams in the tourney yes but to say they are a sure fire bet to win it all no. Kansas has a elite player in Sherron Collins but they too just like Syracuse with Wesley Johnson and whoever the other number one will be they all can be stopped.

So, tune in on Sunday as the whole country will watch as the field of sixty five is announced and millions of people will be filling out their brackets.

Returning Champions Given Tough Draws For NCAA Tournaments

Photobucket
By Justin Worsley

At 6 p.m., the road to the National Championship was unveiled for 330 lucky college wrestlers. The 33-man bracket had little difficulty or controversial seeding issues, and as usual the Big Ten conference dominated to seeding, grabbing 11 wrestlers who are seeded in the top three of their weight classes, including four top seeds. The Big XII conference isn't far behind with seven wrestlers who have earned top three seeds.

One of the most anticipated finals that could happen is in the 149 weight class where Iowa's Brent Metcalf, a wrestler seen by many as the nation's greatest, is seeded second over Ohio State's Lance Palmer. Metcalf earned a 3-1 decision over Palmer earlier in the season, however, Palmer got his revenge in the Big Ten tournament final, where he dominated Metcalf for a 9-3 decision.

Metcalf was on fire all of last season until the national finals, where he was shocked by N.C. State's Darrion Caldwell. Caldwell sat out this season due to a shoulder injury.

Along with Caldwell, defending 157-pound champion Jordan Burroughs will also be forced to sit out this post-season after tearing his PCL and LCL during a December match against Steve Brown of Central Michigan.

In a season dominated by underclassmen, five wrestlers will defend their national title. Cornell's Troy Nickerson is seeded second at the 125-pound weight class behind Indiana's undefeated Angel Escobedo. Escobedo earned a win by injury default over Nickerson in the Southern Scuffle tournament finals.

Michigan State's Frankie Gomez has taken the third seed at the 133-pound weight class after being upset in the Big Ten Conference Championships by Iowa's Daniel Dennis. Gomez and Dennis, the second seed, could meet again in the semifinals.

Edinboro's Jarrod King won the title at 165 last season and is currently the second seed behind Wisconsin's undefeated Andrew Howe. King's only loss this season was to seventh-seeded Rick Schmelyun of Bloomsburg, who dominated King 15-2 in the semifinals of the Southern Scuffle.

Jake Varner showed no signs of rust all season as he went 26-0, cruising to a top seed in the 197-pound weight class, where he was crown champion last year. The Iowa State wrestler could face a very tough Lamar Brown from Rutgers early in the tournament, however, he is heavily favored to repeat his title reign.

After winning the heavyweight title last season in a bracket filled with upsets, Missouri's Mark Ellis failed to impress during his senior season, losing ten matches and opening the way for conference rival David Zabriskie from Iowa State to claim to top seed of the tournament. Zabriskie, who has defeated Ellis three times this season, was the top seed last season, however, was upset in the semifinals by Duke's Konrad Dudziak. Zabriskie finished fifth last season.

The NCAA national wrestling tournament being on Thursday, Mar 18 in Omaha. For more information, including tournament brackets, visit ncaa.com
