Jays Sign Dotel as Closer
By Justin Worsley,
The Toronto Blue Jays have signed relief pitcher Octavio Dotel to a one-year, $3.5 million deal.
Dotel, 37, recorded 22 saves last season while pitching for the Colorado Rockies, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. His 4.08 ERA, however, is above his career average of 3.75.
The deal also includes a 2012 club option. Last year's closer, Kevin Gregg, is currently a free agent.
Dotel has saved 105 games in 12 seasons. Toronto will be Dotel's 11th home, making him the 14th player in MLB history to play for more than 10 teams. The only team Dotel has spent more than one full season with is an early-career stint in Houston between 2000-04.
