49ers Fire Singletary

Though he was one of the most terrorizing defenders on the field, Mike Singletary just couldn't bring similar success as a head coach.

With San Francisco officially out of playoff contention following their 25-17 loss to the St. Louis Rams, 49ers owner Jed York announced shortly after the game that he has fired Singletary.

San Francisco was preseason favorites to win the NFC West and make the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Instead, San Francisco began the season 0-5 and hosted a carousel at the quarterback position with both Alex and Troy Smith battling for the starting spot.

Troy Smith won the starting job in Sunday's game against the Rams, but was benched in the fourth quarter in favor of Alex Smith.

Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula will be the interim coach when the 49ers play their final game on Jan. 2 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Singletary is the fourth head coach fired this season.
