Atlanta Hawks shooting guard Joe Johnson will be out four to six weeks after injuring his right elbow.

Johnson, 29, will undergo arthroscopic surgery in Pensacola, Florida on Thursday to remove what the Hawks described as a "loose body" in his elbow. Renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews of Alabama will conduct the procedure. Andrews has worked with several sports stars in the past, including Miami Vikings quarterback Brett Favre, St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford and St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols.

Atlanta is 12-7 on the year and 2.5 games behind the Orlando Magic for the Southeast Division lead after winning four straight games. Johnson, who was given a six-year, $119 million contract by Atlanta during the summer.

Johnson led the team with 17.1 points per game and 5.2 assists. Maurice Evans replaced Johnson in the starting lineup during Wednesday's win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Johnson has made four consecutive All-Star teams.
