Nets Get Vujacic in Three-Team Trade

The New Jersey Nets have acquired guard Sasha Vujacic from the Los Angeles Lakers in a three-team trade.

The deal will send Terrence Williams to the Houston Rockets and power forward Joe Smith to Los Angeles. The Nets will also receive a 2011 first-round draft pick from Los Angeles and a lottery-protected 2012 first-round pick from Houston.

The Nets are now loaded in future draft picks. In 2008, the Golden State Warriors traded their lottery-protected first-round pick to New Jersey in exchange for point guard Marcus Williams. Williams only lasted one year before bolting to Memphis.

Overall, the Nets have five first-round picks in the next two seasons.

The trade will not be official until December 15 due to NBA rules which delay offseason signees from being traded. Smith, who will join his eighth team since 2003, signed with the Nets last September.

The deal rids the Nets of Williams, who was sent to the D-League last month after violating a series of team rules. Williams was recalled last week, but was put on the inactive list for Tuesday night's game against the Philadelphia 76ers by head coach Avery Johnson.

Vujacic, a 26-year-old Slovenian native, will most likely play behind Devin Harris at the point guard position. Unable to find a way into the Lakers rotations, Vujacic only averaged 1.8 points per game.
