Mariners Ship Johnson to San Diego

By Justin Worsley,

The Seattle Mariners have completed a trade with the San Diego Padres which will send catcher Rob Johnson to San Diego in exchange for cash considerations as well as a player to be named later.

Johnson, 28, was the opening day starter this season, however, only started 61 games until Adam Moore replaced him on the starting lineup. The right-hander had a miserable offensive campaign, batting only .191 with a 2.93 on base percentage and two home runs.

On Dec. 13, Seattle designated Johnson for assignment in order to sign designated hitter Jack Crust to their 40-man roster.

The Mariners sent Johnson to Triple-A Tacoma in August and he never was recalled. With the Raniers, Johnson batted .297 in 18 games.

Johnson will most likely serve as the backup to Nick Hundley. Last year's backup, Yorvit Torrealba, signed with the Texas Rangers last month.
