After spending last season as the oldest active player in the NHL, defenseman Chris Chelios has decided that he is getting too old to be on the ice. According to a report by Fox Sports Detroit, Chelios announced during a Cubs-Reds baseball game in Chicago on Friday that he will retire from hockey in order to take an unnamed front office position with the Detroit Red Wings.

Chelios spent last year bouncing back between the Atlanta Thrashers and their AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves. In seven NHL games, Chelios failed to score a point and Atlanta stumbled away from the playoff picture for the third straight season.

Returning to Detroit means returning to the team where the glory days of Chelios' career was spent. Chelios twice hoisted the Stanley Cup in Detroit, during 2002 and 2008.

Former teammate of Chelios, Steve Yzerman, left his position as the team's vice president last May in order to become the general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Chelios was drafted 40th overall in the 1983 NHL Draft by Montreal. In his career, Chelios has a +350 rating along with 185 goals and 763 assists.
