On the final day of the NFL draft, the Jets shockingly released guard Alan Faneca, despite making his ninth-consecutive All-Pro team last season. Many saw Faneca as a mentor for rookie Vladimir Ducasse, who was drafted the day before in the second-round of the NFL draft.

Faneca, however didn't last long in free agency. On Tuesday, it was announced that Faneca, 33, has signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals.

Faneca was a key part of the Jets offense last season, which led the league in rushing yards. The Cardinals are hoping Faneca, who also played for Pittsburgh, will help spark their rushing attack as they ease quarterback Matt Leinart into the starting line-up. Arizona ranked 28th last season in rushing yards, led by rookie Chris Wells 793 yards.

One of the main reasons that the Jets released Faneca was due to his salary. Faneca was set to make $7.5 million this season. The money saved by the Jets will be used to sign Ducasse as well as several other incoming players.

Faneca was selected 26th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1998 NFL Draft.
