Colorado Trades Hannan To Caps

By Justin Worsley,

The Washington Captials have acquired defenseman Scott Hannan from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward Thomas Fleischmann.

Hannan, 31, brings in blue-line defensive talent to Washington, a team known mostly for their high-powered offense. With Hannan, the Capitals will be more effective on killing power plays and more importantly, shutting down opposing scorers.

Hannan waived his no-trade clause to be sent to Washington. The Avalanche signed the 12-year veteran in 2007 as a free agent after he spent most of his career in San Jose.

Hannan currently has a plus-minus ratio of plus-1 and six assists for the season. At one point of the season, Hannan had a plus-4 rating, but he was on the line during all four of Vancouvers goals in a 4-2 loss on Nov. 24.

Washington won't have to worry much about Hannan spending much time in the box either. Hannan has only served six minutes in the box so far this season.

The Capitals are currently in first-place of the south division.
