Johnson, Finnegan Fined $25k for Brawl
By Justin Worsley
The NFL has fined Tennessee Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan and Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson $25,000 each for fighting one another during the fourth quarter of Houston's 20-0 divisional win.
Finnegan agitated Johnson by jabbing his facemask at the line of scrimmage in the middle of the play. Johnson retaliated and both players ripped each others helmets off. Finnegan was thrown on the ground where Johnson threw two haymakers at Finnegan before the referees broke the two up. Both players were ejected with Houston fans cheering Johnson.
Neither player will be suspended for their actions. Johnson was fined $7,500 last season for throwing Finnegan to the ground by his facemask.
Immediately after the game, Johnson apologized for his actions and stated that he "lost his cool." Prior to being ejected, Johnson has nine receptions and a touchdown.
This is the third fine for Finnegan this season, who is perceived by many as a dirty player. Last year, Sports Illustrated asked 296 NFL players who they felt was the dirtiest player in the league, Finnegan finished sixth in the poll. The league fined Finnegan $5,000 for throwing New York Giants wide receiver Steve Smith to the ground by his helmet. Two weeks later, Finnegan was fined $10,000 for hitting Denver Broncos guard Chris Kuper after his helmet was knocked off.
Houston and Tennessee play each other once more this season, on Dec. 19 at LP Field.
