Cincinnati Reds first baseman has agreed to a three-year, $38 million contract to stay with the team.

Votto, 27, won the National League MVP award in 2010 after batting .324 with 37 homers and 113 RBIs. The Reds made their first playoff appearance since 1995.

Votto was eligible for arbitration this season had he not signed an extension.

Signing Votto helps the Reds keep another core player on their roster. Cincinnati also signed outfielder Jay Bruce and pitcher Bronson Arroyo to extensions this offseason.

Votto was also named to the All-Star team in 2010, the first in his career.
